When Educational TV Goes Wrong

I’m on instagram now, follow me, @babesrockinmami!

I have always been a fan of educational tv for Nate, I think preschool appropriate shows in the right doses are great and I don’t mind them at all.  Caillou (until the incessant whining started making Nate whine), Barney, Curious George or Sesame Street.  I also think you should really watch with your child so that you can ask/answer questions.  It helps too because sometimes you find out you might not want your child watching the show.  One of our ‘banned’ shows is Spongebob, he watches it at his Aunt’s houses because that’s what Aunt’s do but we have never allowed it.  I think the show is annoying and obnoxious and the characters can be mean.  To each their own but that’s one of my things.

I have noticed that Nate genuinely learns from most of the shows and occasionally the shows character reinforces lessons that we are teaching him.  Like, manners, not being disrespectful and picking up trash, just as some examples.

But, there are times, where educational tv goes wrong.  Nate started telling me things like ‘Caillou doesn’t like carrots, I don’t like carrots.’, even though they are his favorite.  He threw some tantrums over silly things and I realized Caillou does that.  He started demanding I let him do certain things, because Caillou did.  He would imitate the negative behavior (only on Caillou) instead of learning the lessons.  It used to be one of his favorite shows but after he realized that it wasn’t how he should act he’s lost interest in it which is just fine with me.  Caillou is the main example because they are the easiest to remember.  There have been several instances where he picked out the negative lesson in a show or the bad habit or the silly thing and focused on it first and that my friends, is when educational tv goes so very wrong.

Have you noticed this in your kids?  If you don’t have kids…do you like Spongebob?

  1. I think Spongebob is annoying as well and some of the humor is way above the level young children should be privy to. I have NEVER liked Caillou for the very reasons you listed. The incessant whining grated on my nerves. I love Arthur though, I wish they would come back out with Berenstein Bears or Richard LIttle’s animal characters I loved those.

  2. Well, SpongeBob is banned in my house actually. He’s an asshole and I don’t need my kids hearing new and improved ways to talk back to me. I actually had a ban on Caillou, too. He was SO damn whiney and when my oldest started whining after watching it – Caillou was done here.

  3. I can not stand Spongebob. Lil Duck only sees it at someone else’s house. I think it’s stupid and not for younger children. Ugh… Makes me cranky thinking about it :D probably because I catch flack for not being a fan. I don’t like American Guy or whatever it’s called either.

  4. I remember when Sponge Bob first came out. A couple we are friends with – ADULT couple thought it was absolutely hilarious and couldn’t believe we didn’t watch it. I didn’t think it was good then and I don’t now. And I agree with Angel – some of the humor is way above young kids.
