Nate Has a Surprise!

After three years, four months and 24 days (but who is counting)…Nathaniel has gotten a ‘real’ haircut!!

He has had multiple trims, his first one was when he was a few days old because his hair was all weird around the ears but he has never had more then an inch come off and it was usually just a bang trim.  After him being called a girl a million times a day, I think it started to bother him (thanks douches!!) and make him feel different and so he started asking to get his haircut.  However, each time I would offer to take him, he would change his mind.  Then a few days ago, we just went for it.  I knew that we all wanted to keep it long, he does not like short hair and he has lots of cowlicks so it needs to be longer.  I showed him pictures of different cuts and this is what he picked.  He looks so different and he loves it!

Makeup Monday {pink hair & bright nails}

Makeup Monday

I decided to do something a bit different, not a makeup look today, I had to touch up the pink in my hair so I decided to catch it on camera.  Despite years of hair coloring I am still able to give you some don’ts!

Don’t let a glob fall on your thigh and then wipe it automatically with your dye covered gloved hand.  Please ignore the lack of shaving.

Don’t forget to vaseline your forehead!

What I do is take my hair and separate everything out.  What will be colored pink and what won’t.  Then I get the color on!  Tip: nail polish remover will take the dye out of just about everything!

End with colored hair and a goofy face!

Now onto the nails!

Apply a bright colored base coat, Sally Hansen Insta-dry in Lightening for me!  Then paint striped on with an Art Deco by LA Color polish, the tip is super extra skinny for detailing things, I chose to use Teal Glitter which I got from my swap partner!  You can find these at most Dollar Trees!  Top with a clear coat and you have bright nails!  These didn’t turn out quite how I wanted but I didn’t want to take it all off and start again.

Makeup Monday this week is going to be root touch up Monday…I’m just not in a good makeup place right now.  To do makeup is something that is fun and creative and I really enjoy doing MM for you guys BUT I’m not in that place this week.

To touch up your roots first you need dye.  I’ve been using the same brand since I was 13 and I can count on one hands the times I’ve used another.  It’s cheap and works great for me.  $2.97 a box…when I first started using it it was $1.99 and I only bought it because it was cheap but now the only difference I personally notice in the more expensive stuff is…more colors (usually when I branch out that is why), easier use (I’ve been at it long enough not too care) and they usually come with a weekly conditioning treatment with about 6 weeks of product.  I have super long hair so I use two boxes, it’s recommended that if your hair is longer then shoulder length you need two boxes.  Nothing worse then running out!  Stores have been out of my color for a month and my roots (oh you will see) couldn’t wait any longer so I went lighter.

You want to start with greasy hair (1-2 days dirty) that hasn’t had any product in it.  It’s better for your hair if you have some natural oils to help protect the hair shaft.  I also do my weekly conditioning treatment the day before I decide not to wash so if I’m dying on Wednesday I will do the treatment Sunday or Monday and not wash Monday/Tuesday.

Here is my greazzy hair and lots of roots.

Next your going to take your hair and separate it into four sections.

Like so…

Then you take your applicator and I apply at the root, combing through with the applicator making sure to get everything section by section.  Don’t put the dye directly on your scalp!

Make sure you have everything covered.  Don’t use it all because you will need leftover dye to do the rest after you wait!  I comb through each section to make sure it’s seamless.

Wait however long your directions say, mine say 40.  Then you take the leftover dye and put it through the rest of your hair for 5 minutes and then wash out with warm water and use the conditioner that comes in the package.

The only adjustments to do your whole head would be to coat each section thoroughly and check your package for the adjusted time.  Mine is 45 minutes but they don’t all work that way.

Now have fun dying your hair!
